Chapter 21

I wasn’t proud of it, but when I woke up in the circle—surrounded by the nude bodies of my fellow harem inhabitants—I ran.

I showered in Malachi's private bathroom and dressed as quickly as possible in a t-shirt and a rolled-up pair of his sweatpants.

I walked to the harem to find my bedroom had been cleaned. The door unlocked. The brass handle mocked me with its unaffected existence.

I hadn’t expected my room to have been refurbished so quickly.

Did Lucas and Malachi want to get rid of me?

My fingers trembled as my hand rose to the cold metal.

I couldn’t go in.

Tim's glasses, fogged, hiding blank and cold eyes behind the lenses, flashed through my mind. I felt lightheaded as I staggered away from the door. Unable to stomach the idea of going inside.

My room had been both my home base and my torture chamber for weeks.

I had been given a bed and warm food. Access to private bathing facilities and more clothes than I could conceivably wear.

But on the other side of the coin, I had been woken up by alarms almost every hour of the night. My food had been tampered with; I no longer trusted it. Only eating packaged food from the vending machines. My shower had been broken and stuck on cold for days. When it had finally been fixed, someone had put a grainy substance in the showerhead, so that sticky purple liquid rained down on me.

I was lucky that my hair was almost black because it would have stained. Sam told me that it was 'kool-aid'. Which meant less than nothing to me.

Every incident had come and gone episodically but enough that I had been mistrustful of almost everything about my new environment for so long.

Prison was similar. You couldn’t trust the inmates or the guards. You couldn’t trust the food. More people were attacked and killed in the showers above all else.

The Wilde Estate just looked prettier.

But both were savage in their own ways.

Would it be different now that Cecile was gone? I wondered.

It hadn’t hit me yet. I still expected her to walk around the corner and sneer, or make a veiled threat. My unease would not disappear overnight. Perhaps it never would.

Paradise was brilliant, but it only took one person to ruin it. I eyed every member of the harem with suspicion. Anyone could turn on me at any time and it would Cecile all over again.

“What are you doing down here?” Lucas stood down the corridor. Leaning against Cecile’s door as if he didn’t have a care in the world. His hands in his jean pockets.

“I thought I would go back to my room,” I said with a shrug. “Cecile’s gone. It’s safer now.”

Lucas looked like he had swallowed something sour. His expression quickly blanked. “Is that what you want to do?”

I chewed my bottom lip. “It’s better this way.”

Lucas stalked forward. His movements were predatory. “So that’s it? You make a stand and take something for yourself only to throw it away?”

I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye.
